super 8 - media platforms

E media

Rotten tomatoes if a website where fans can share thoughts about super 8. Rotten tomatoes allow audiences to watch different super 8 Trailers and pictures, with more than 28videos and trailers to watch on just super 8. The website also allows people to look through pictures, these are on the front page which allows people to choose from what they wish to explore through. People are able to see casts of super 8 which informs audience of people who were in the movie.

Audiences have access to reminisce through cast shots of the film with a picture of the cast member making it clear for the audiences to look through, audiences have an opportunity to identify the role of the casts This is an advantage for audiences as they can read about each cast, watch trailers and look through pictures which increases the level of interest they produce whilst getting to know about the film in more depth. However as this website also shows the cast’s in order of what other films they have been in it may appeal to a wider range of audiences as then they may be more convinced to watch the movie due to having a member of the cast group in super 8 that has taken part in another film, which may be appealing to a number of people. The critic’s reviews are carried at the bottom of the page. Instead of the audiences viewing long reviews the producers have decreased the reviews into little bubbles. What I noticed is that most of the reviews are about people in the media rather than local people who have gone to see the film. This enables us to feel that were getting reviews on the film for from a more reliable source.

This website also includes ‘latest news about super8’. This is where news is posted about the Director- ‘’JJ Abram’s has another secret project for you to wonder about, He's working on it with screenwriter Billy Ray’’ This is the type of news Rotten tomatoes informs its audience about. Just above the news box on the right hand side of the super 8 page, other films are being promoted through super 8 this is because of the same genre and may be same actors or even Director - JJ Abrams . There could be disadvantages to this as people may not be totally focuses on Super 8 as they may be distracted by the ‘ movies like super 8’. This would mean audiences would be distracted from being interested in super 8 which could lead to a downfall in audiences.

I believe this website is made for mature audiences that like to compare films of the same genre and go into extreme detail about cast’s , and cast’s that may have worked in a different movie of the same genre or even different. This website mainly informs and educates audiences and certainly increases the number of fans for super 8

Moving image

super 8 has also been advertised through moving image which was the only media platform which shared the most of the movie by the use of trailer, which informed audiences about the genre of the film and the cast’s in the film. This theatrical trailer was one minute and thirty seconds long, which was long enough to construct enigma codes for the audiences ( theory by barthes). The opening of the trailer has dark black colours instantly creating suspense and making the audiences feel like something bad is going to happen. The use of suspense makes audiences want to watch the film. The use of CGI makes the explosions in trailer look realistic which frightens the audience as the use of explosions is terrifying and makes people shiver. The sounds used throughout the trailer such as Diegetic and Non diegetic influences the audience’s moods. For example the sounds of the explosions are shown in the shot of the explosion and then carried out from the shot with another 3-4 sec of the continuous sound of the explosion, which drags along the mood which the explosions create to the audiences watching the trailer and create effects of mystery. The trailer includes institutional information at the end of the trailer which informs the audiences what institutional company has invested in the film. And the name of the director and producer informs the audience who directed the film which brings up the success of the directors in the past films they have directed, this educates the audience (blumler and katz) which encourages the audiences to watch super8, as it creates the image that this movie will be good as the director has made successful movies in the past.

 Print media

Super 8 has been advertised from the use of this platform. The use of billboards which I believe had been an advantage to the number of fans super 8 has today. The reason why I think Billboards really worked for advertisement is because there big, eye catching , attract different aged audiences , and make it an interesting picture which people tend to stop and stare at for a few seconds, it has drama, colour and shows the genre of the film, as billboards are big they have a lot to say. The way in which this media platform (billboards) will attract the attention of the audiences would be when there traveling by road, stopping at the traffic lights people tend to look straight for cars and people to look out for the green light, the billboards around easily catch their eye which can makes people interested in the look of the film and the genre it produces in people minds. This links back to the theory of blumler and Katz- uses of gratification. As people travel by road a lot whether it’s walking or in a car they may see the billboard multiple times and see the super 8 advertisement again and again which would increase their interest level into watching the movie. Billboards are a cheap media text which would be beneficial when promoting the film.

Super 8 billboard has used a variety of different fonts in order to attract the audience’s attention while they are travelling. Moreover the use of dark colours used for the background links with the weather, the black indicates mystery, creates a depressed atmosphere, suggests that something bad is going occur and shows that the country is being powered by something, which leads to the audiences asking questions and created enigma codes (theory by Barthes).
