EASTER HOLIDAY WORK

Media Forms: What techniques does the extract use to establish the text engage the audience?

The techniques the extract uses are different camera shots to keep the audience engaged for example different places are used, such as the lady walking and she pulls back whena care comes in fast speed a moment where you will not just blink but maybe scream or jump back, where as in this advertisement the lady doesn’t, so it enages the attention of the audience to keep watching as its enteratinign and different. It shows a basic start of a typical day as she wash’s her face etc, which leads people to believe init. Th extract also uses voice over of the news man talking about ‘ world record’ which gives the audicne a background of what is happening, ( uses and gratification –bumer and katz)

The silence of when the lady breaks the record as she eats the chocolate engages the attention of the audience as everything goes silent it becomes an interesting moment to discover which is used for a dramatic affect

Who does this text/brand appeal to?

I believe this text appeals to females as the main role of the advertisement is done by a female, however the ethnic use of a Chinese lady, maybe has something to do with the strength that they hold as they believe in keeping fit and healthy, however the advertisement is for chocolate therefore it can appeal not just to chocolate lovers but to also weight conscious individuals, as the female is shown as being strong, as she doesn’t blink until she eats the chocolate and she is in good shape.

How is gender/age place represented in the extract?

The way in which gender is represented in this extract is by showing male boys being able ‘cool’ as they meet use the blackberry to contact each other (friends) and meet up within second’s shows that boys have power with a blackberry bold. The age group is teenagers therefore appeals to teenagers. The snowy day shows the cold winters however the boys are not sitting home, they are meeting up to play a sport which must be difficult to play in the snow.

TECHNOPHOBES

BBC Three is launching a new program called “Technophobes”, following the lives of five people who are afraid of technology.

Audience:  This program will appeal  to people who are either good with technology as they would want to know why these 5 people are afraid of technology, or either people who are afraid of technology themselves. I believe this program will only appeal to teenagers as they are the younger generation so there for are more into technology, and therefor would surprise then seeing people who are afraid of technology.

Institution:  Because it would be broadcasted on BBC 3 I believe it would appeal to a number of different audiences rather than just teenagers as BBC3 is a well watch TV channel which people usually watch documentaries.

Representation:  I would expect this program to be interesting for those who have settled well into the new advanced technology, as it would entertain them seeing others who still have not been able to. I also think it will have good chances of appealing to different audiences such as old people who have lived through the technology created in the past century there for they have lived, watch through the more and more advanced technology created throughout the years. There for the older audience may find it interesting to watch this program as they may also feel the same.

Review:  This is a joke, people are not accepting the fact that technology is being advanced for our own benefit.. I don’t understand why and how you can be afraid of things made by humans, when you are a human yourself. However I do agree and respect that old people may seem frightened as they are being newly introduced to the advanced technology as when they were teenagers TV was in black and white. But for adults living in this century and being scared of technology is weird. It’s nothing to be scared of it’s just a way of media which is created for us, for our own benefits and we should accept it with a smile.

super 8 - media platforms

E media

Rotten tomatoes if a website where fans can share thoughts about super 8. Rotten tomatoes allow audiences to watch different super 8 Trailers and pictures, with more than 28videos and trailers to watch on just super 8. The website also allows people to look through pictures, these are on the front page which allows people to choose from what they wish to explore through. People are able to see casts of super 8 which informs audience of people who were in the movie.

Audiences have access to reminisce through cast shots of the film with a picture of the cast member making it clear for the audiences to look through, audiences have an opportunity to identify the role of the casts This is an advantage for audiences as they can read about each cast, watch trailers and look through pictures which increases the level of interest they produce whilst getting to know about the film in more depth. However as this website also shows the cast’s in order of what other films they have been in it may appeal to a wider range of audiences as then they may be more convinced to watch the movie due to having a member of the cast group in super 8 that has taken part in another film, which may be appealing to a number of people. The critic’s reviews are carried at the bottom of the page. Instead of the audiences viewing long reviews the producers have decreased the reviews into little bubbles. What I noticed is that most of the reviews are about people in the media rather than local people who have gone to see the film. This enables us to feel that were getting reviews on the film for from a more reliable source.

This website also includes ‘latest news about super8’. This is where news is posted about the Director- ‘’JJ Abram’s has another secret project for you to wonder about, He's working on it with screenwriter Billy Ray’’ This is the type of news Rotten tomatoes informs its audience about. Just above the news box on the right hand side of the super 8 page, other films are being promoted through super 8 this is because of the same genre and may be same actors or even Director - JJ Abrams . There could be disadvantages to this as people may not be totally focuses on Super 8 as they may be distracted by the ‘ movies like super 8’. This would mean audiences would be distracted from being interested in super 8 which could lead to a downfall in audiences.

I believe this website is made for mature audiences that like to compare films of the same genre and go into extreme detail about cast’s , and cast’s that may have worked in a different movie of the same genre or even different. This website mainly informs and educates audiences and certainly increases the number of fans for super 8

Moving image

super 8 has also been advertised through moving image which was the only media platform which shared the most of the movie by the use of trailer, which informed audiences about the genre of the film and the cast’s in the film. This theatrical trailer was one minute and thirty seconds long, which was long enough to construct enigma codes for the audiences ( theory by barthes). The opening of the trailer has dark black colours instantly creating suspense and making the audiences feel like something bad is going to happen. The use of suspense makes audiences want to watch the film. The use of CGI makes the explosions in trailer look realistic which frightens the audience as the use of explosions is terrifying and makes people shiver. The sounds used throughout the trailer such as Diegetic and Non diegetic influences the audience’s moods. For example the sounds of the explosions are shown in the shot of the explosion and then carried out from the shot with another 3-4 sec of the continuous sound of the explosion, which drags along the mood which the explosions create to the audiences watching the trailer and create effects of mystery. The trailer includes institutional information at the end of the trailer which informs the audiences what institutional company has invested in the film. And the name of the director and producer informs the audience who directed the film which brings up the success of the directors in the past films they have directed, this educates the audience (blumler and katz) which encourages the audiences to watch super8, as it creates the image that this movie will be good as the director has made successful movies in the past.

 Print media

Super 8 has been advertised from the use of this platform. The use of billboards which I believe had been an advantage to the number of fans super 8 has today. The reason why I think Billboards really worked for advertisement is because there big, eye catching , attract different aged audiences , and make it an interesting picture which people tend to stop and stare at for a few seconds, it has drama, colour and shows the genre of the film, as billboards are big they have a lot to say. The way in which this media platform (billboards) will attract the attention of the audiences would be when there traveling by road, stopping at the traffic lights people tend to look straight for cars and people to look out for the green light, the billboards around easily catch their eye which can makes people interested in the look of the film and the genre it produces in people minds. This links back to the theory of blumler and Katz- uses of gratification. As people travel by road a lot whether it’s walking or in a car they may see the billboard multiple times and see the super 8 advertisement again and again which would increase their interest level into watching the movie. Billboards are a cheap media text which would be beneficial when promoting the film.

Super 8 billboard has used a variety of different fonts in order to attract the audience’s attention while they are travelling. Moreover the use of dark colours used for the background links with the weather, the black indicates mystery, creates a depressed atmosphere, suggests that something bad is going occur and shows that the country is being powered by something, which leads to the audiences asking questions and created enigma codes (theory by Barthes).

Task 1: High-key and Low-key Lighting

High-key and Low-key Lighting

Task 1: High key lighting http://youtu.be/sUvkWkxFb2M  < A video showing a great example of High Key lighting, it really help’s understand how it works J

High key lighting is simply more filler light which is used to make photographs look more realistic such as picture 5. It clearly shows her body position and face expression, which is why the high key lighting is used, as it has a happy looking lady which therefore should be shown with realistic use of lighting. The shadow shown in picture 5 is also realistic, rather than gloomy and dark.

Low key lighting http://youtu.be/91gU93J2Q8k < video showing example of low key lighting

Low key lighting is simply used to create strong contrasts of light and creates dramatic shadows. For example picture 2 is focused on her face and all around there’s a black background creating a dramatic effect. Low-Key lighting with top lighting which allows the audience to see the facial expression of the protagonist, making the picture seem mysterious. Furthermore the picture shows her holding a Fag which shows how she’s being unhealthy and dominant as she face’s upwards  which can empathises to a number of things; power, disagreement, beauty, anger .

The pictures which I suggest show top lighting, which is simply light that comes from above used to make a character look more glamorous, is pictures 2, 4.This is because both of those pictures represent stars, as picture 2 makes the women look glamorous and aims to only show her in the picture with the use of low key lighting, makes her stand out. And picture 4 is a low angel shot, with again the use of low key lighting which help make him look powerful and like a hero.

Furthermore another type of lighting is back lighting, used in the pictures; 7,10,1. This is to create a silhouette of the characters in the pictures for example picture 1 mainly shows her outline and the shadow of the smoke as the light is coming from the back it is making the image have the touch of suspense, and  making the actress look mysterious. As the lighting makes the effect of the smoke look closer to the camera, going across the characters face.

Picture 7 has the effect of back lighting making the four people in the picture stand out as it shows there outline of the body, however doesn’t show the face. The back lighting creates shadows of the characters making them seem powerful. Last but not least image 10 is also a low angel shot making the character in the picture look powerful. The backlighting creates the effect of darkness all around the character in the picture but makes the character himself stand out and makes him look strong and powerful as the camera angel makes the person looking at the picture feel as if they are looking up to him making him seem powerful.

IMAGE 1- the effect created in image one is mysteriousness which is from the use of back lighting making the character stand out and show more light on one side of her face than the other.

IMAGE 2- the effect of image 2 is that it makes the character look dominant and makes her stand out with the use of low key lighting. Makes her seem special as the light is focused on her and everything else around her is black.

IMAGE 3- the effect of image 3 is that it is a medium shot making the character stand out showing his body position from his head to just about under this shoulders. This picture has high key lighting, making him stand out from the background, look powerful and show’s his facial expression.

IMAGE 4- the effect of image 4 is that it has low key lighting, low angel shot, and top lighting which putting together makes the  character in the picture look powerful and makes him seem like hero.

IMAGE 5 – the effect of image 5 is that it’s a high key lighting used which makes the character and her shadow shown in the picture seem more realistic. And the contract between her and her shadow (white and dark) makes the image seem more dramatic, as her facial expression seems terrified. This helps emphasise that she is terrified and the realistic use of shadow from the lighting makes the character look real as well as serious.

IMAGE 6- the effect of lighting used in image 6, makes the picture look more romantic and cute. As the light is shown coming from blinds and the shadow created by the blinds on the male’s face; makes the picture look natural and flows with the mood it creates.

IMAGE 7 – the effect created in this image is from the use of back lighting making the characters seem more powerful as it creates a silhouette.

IMAGE 8- the effect created in image 8, makes the person looking at the image sense horror, dangerous. As the image shows the characters facial expression with the use of back lighting leaving an effective shadow.

IMAGE 9-  the effect of image 9 makes people feel  sorry for the character as she is holding her hands together looking up with her eyes closes, creating the feeling of sadness and denial. This is from the use of High key lighting which shows the charters facial expression and body position.

IMAGE 10- the effect of image 10 is that it makes the character seem strong and powerful with the use of low angle shot, low key lighting, and back lighting creating the effect of dramatic shadow, and makes the image look like horror as the image includes stairs and a door from where the character is standing, making it seem as if he will come for you.

IMAGE 11- the effect created it image 10 seems to show love and romance but in a old fashion way, what I mean by this is that the use of lighting creates no effects such as shadows or pacific face expressions, However the image use’s High key lighting making it look just realistic. This can empathise to true love.

The different ways in which it is brought to the attention of the audience through other media companies associated with fox and News Corporation is by having more ways of advertising it to the audience, having trade company’s, different fox entertainment and studios.

The film Alvin and the chipmunks brought the attention of an audience as they had tie-ins which where used to promote the film, for example toy companies such as ‘toy’s R uss’ Which used posters of the film, getting the attention of children. This was one way used to promote the film. They promote the film on the official website of the film by having a link to like it on Facebook allowing people to have discussions about the film and see different people thought on the film.

They already have an audience as the chipmunk film has been released many different times before encouraging people to watch every new one that comes out, this is how they are making their money.
